How to Choose a Pendant Necklace Length for Your Neckline

OLÁA Journal · Jewelry Guide

The same pendant can sit neatly inside an open collar and disappear behind a crewneck. When choosing a pendant necklace length, start with where you want the pendant to rest—not just the number printed beside the chain. Your neckline, proportions, and the pendant itself all change the result.

This guide uses the OLÁA Sunburst Radiance Necklace as a practical example. Its adjustable 470–520 mm chain gives you a defined range to measure against clothes you already wear, so you can make a more informed choice before ordering.

Measure the chain path before choosing a length

Put on the top you plan to wear. Use a soft measuring tape, or a piece of string measured against a ruler, to trace the path of a necklace around your neck. Let it rest naturally; do not pull it tight. Check the position in a mirror, then compare it with a necklace you already find comfortable.

For the Sunburst Radiance Necklace, the listed chain length adjusts from 470 to 520 mm, approximately 18.5 to 20.5 inches. Try both lengths with your tape. The pendant hangs from that chain, so chain length alone does not tell you the exact lowest point of the jewelry. Neck size and body proportions also affect where it falls.

With an open shirt: keep the pendant inside the opening

A button-down shirt gives you an easy way to frame a pendant. Start with the collar as you normally wear it, then compare the shorter and longer positions. Look for a setting where the pendant is visible without repeatedly touching the edge of the shirt.

Move your shoulders and sit down before deciding. A necklace that looks centered while standing can shift as fabric folds. If both ends of the adjustment range place the pendant behind the shirt, a different chain length or neckline may work better for that outfit.

With a crewneck: choose a clear resting place

For a plain crewneck, consider whether you want the pendant to sit above the fabric or rest fully on it. A position directly on the neckline can make the pendant harder to see and may let it catch on the edge. Compare the actual neckline with your measured chain path rather than assuming every crewneck fits the same way.

A smooth, solid-colored top creates a simple background for the sunburst shape. If you prefer wearing jewelry over a sweater, include the sweater's thickness in your fit check. Do not stretch a chain to force it over a high neckline.

With a V-neck: compare the pendant with the point

Try the pendant within the open area of the V, leaving some visible space between the jewelry and the fabric. The right amount of space is personal; the useful test is whether the pendant stays visible as you move.

A shallow V and a deep V can require different lengths. If the 18.5–20.5-inch range does not put the pendant where you want it, choose another necklace rather than assuming the adjustable section will extend beyond its listed maximum.

Read pendant size and materials together

The Sunburst Radiance pendant measures 17 mm long by 14 mm wide, approximately 0.67 by 0.55 inches. Its listed chain width is 1.2 mm. Those measurements describe a compact pendant on a fine chain; close-up photography can make jewelry appear much larger, so use a ruler to picture the scale.

The listed material is 18K gold-plated 925 sterling silver with cubic zirconia. Gold plating describes the surface finish, while sterling silver describes the underlying metal. The piece is not solid gold, and cubic zirconia is not diamond. Choose it for its sunburst design and the materials actually listed.

Your pendant necklace buying checklist

  • Measure two positions: Compare 18.5 and 20.5 inches with your intended neckline.
  • Check the pendant: Mark out 17 × 14 mm on paper to understand its size.
  • Try everyday movement: Sit, turn, and check that your preferred position works with the fabric.
  • Confirm the finish: Review the gold-plated sterling silver and cubic zirconia details.
  • Plan for your occasion: Check current availability, shipping information, and returns before ordering for a particular date.

Will an adjustable necklace fit everyone the same way?

No. Adjustment gives you a range, not a universal fit. The same chain can rest at different heights on different people. Measuring against your own necklines is more useful than relying on a model photo alone.

Can I layer this pendant with another necklace?

You can compare it with a shorter necklace you already own. Measure both chains and check that the pendants have room to sit separately. Similar lengths can overlap, and chains may tangle during movement. Start with two pieces, check their fit together, and follow each piece's care instructions.
